Assignment

For each of the following configurations determine the possible terms which
can arise. For each one calculate the degeneracy, and show that the sum
of the degeneracies of the term is equal to the degeneracy of the configuration.
(Hint: for the configurations containing degenerate electrons first write
down the terms from those electrons, and then try to add in the next electron(s))

1s² 2s² 2p 3p 5f

1s² 2s² 2p^{6} 3d 6g 7f

1s² 2s² 2p² 3d

1s² 2s² 2p^{6} 3d² 6g

1s² 2s² 2p² 3d²

For each of the possible configurations (upper → lower)
below, indicate whether the transition would be allowed or not. If not,
which selection rule forbids the transition. (assume that all transitions
are electric dipole transitions)

1s2p → 1s3p Forbidden because they
both have odd parity, or because Δl = 0 for the one lectron whose
quantum numbers change

2s2p → 3s2p Forbidden because they
both have odd parity, or because Δl = 0 for the one lectron whose
quantum numbers change

2s^{2}3p → 2s3p^{2} Allowed

4f^{6}7p → 4f^{7} Forbidden
because they both have odd parity, or because Δl = 2 for the
one lectron whose quantum numbers change

6s9d → 6s6p Allowed
